Performance Excerpts

When I teach, I periodically try to give my students a direct booster shot of musical reality in the form of CD burns of appropriate recorded performances from the legacy of the vast general musical library available to us, as well as particularly from the archival live performance library of the Boston Chamber Music Society with which I was privileged to be a member for some 23 seasons.

Regarding the BCMS aspect of this “reality check,” it should be said that it is one thing to privately slip a student an occasional educational listening opportunity, but another thing to launch instances of it into the planetary orbit of the worldwide web.

Our commercial recordings have all been vetted by each and every performer, of course.

But the simple ethics of decency and professional respect would oblige me to ask consent from each and every member/player (as well as guest artists) for concert or broadcasts spanning years and including specific performances which they may not even now recall.

What to do.

The answer is for me to rely here on a quite adequate but smaller body of performances that include instances of things that I know have already been cleared by the artists for their own earlier website usage (the Schubert below, for example) and/or recordings that involve only me and my extraordinary lifelong colleague: the eminent American pianist, Randall Hodgkinson.

I have discovered that this solution should probably fulfill the needs of your receiving some respectable representation of my own work as it might apply to your inquiry into me as potential resource for you.

This material might seem like more quantity than necessary. And it may be. But my intention about that was to allow you to have something to dip in not just for bulk or variety -- but also for dialects.
